Computers have held a fascination for me since I became involved in a Computer Science program sponsored by the Boy Scouts when I was in the ninth grade. Even though I studied accounting in college, I spent much time in the computer labs teaching myself to program in BASIC and Fortran.
After earning my B.B.A. degree and becoming employed in a public accounting firm, I continued to explore my interest in computers working with the firm's minicomputer system creating custom financial reports, processing tax returns and performing other tasks.
I have worked for a regional dairy products manufacturer where I gained experience with mainframe computers and networks, using programs to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports.
As a consultant advising a variety of small business clients as they used microcomputers to automate their office procedures and information systems I became very familiar the office productivity applications that we use in class.
I try to share my experience with my students to help them see that the activities that we are working on in computer science is not just an academic exercise, but that they are building skills that will help them succeed as they move forward in their education and in life.
